MelloDeath
10:46 PM
In the mid-90's 1993, TradeMark G. collaborated on an easy listening group, MelloDeath, that performed covers of not-so-easy-listening songs. Today I figured I'd use the USB cassette deck to rip it to mp3:

MelloDeath

I'm not good at noise reduction / hiss removal, so this is pretty much right off of the cassette, with some normalization.

Enjoy.

UPDATE: Stricken by nostalgia, TradeMark G. has posted two unreleased MelloDeath tracks. T3h coolness.

The Best Driveway in the World™
11:56 PM

The Best Driveway in the World™, originally uploaded by DJ Empirical.

Google streetview is turned on for Cincinnati finally, so i can show you The Best Driveway in the World™.

This dude is always doing something to his driveway, usually burning gasoline to do it. One time, instead of raking leaves, we saw him using a pressure washer, with all the leaves and crap in the street at the end of the driveway.

personality type

My personality type: the energetic doer

Energetic Doer (ED)
(Just visiting? Take the free test and determine your personality type!)

Energetic Doer Energetic Doers are cheerful and spontaneous persons. They are charming and full of energy and real persons of action. They keep a clear head and the overview even in difficult situations. This makes them popular problem solvers. Their ability of being able to absorb and process information is phenomenal. Energetic Doers also have strong powers of observation and a keen sense when dealing with other people. They are very perceptive, witty and clever. They have a natural ability of convincing others of their point of view. Energetic Doers live completely in the here and now and make spontaneous decisions from one moment to the next. They love being together with other people and are sensuous, lively and amusing conversationalists. It is no problem for them to be the effervescent centre of attention at a party and they are generous, skilful and good hosts. They do not brood over consequences for long; they quickly grasp all the relevant facts, make a pragmatic decision and enforce that decision vigorously. Should a decision later turn out to have been wrong, one can always make new plans.

Energetic Doers magically attract fun and action. They need the kick - as far as possible with other people. Many representatives of this type have dangerous hobbies or go in for extreme sports. They quite consciously put themselves in dangerous situations again and again. At work too, Energetic Doers seek fun and variety above all. They are bored to death by routine, safety and calculability. Crises are their elixir of life and really bring their strong points to light. They react to new challenges flexibly and effectively. They gain their confidence from their imperturbable self-assuredness that they will be able to cope with them. Energetic Doers prefer practical activities which lead to visible results rather than theoretical fields of work. Endless discussions with colleagues quickly get on their nerves and they do not have the patience for interpersonal niceties. They say how something has to be done and thats that!

Energetic Doers keep their friends in suspense with their wit, esprit and quickness in repartee. They mostly have a large circle of friends and acquaintances but often remain non-committal in their relationships. They expect a great deal of reliability and tolerance from their really good friends but are also willing to give the same to them. However, due to their spontaneous nature, they always remain a little surprising and unpredictable, also for their partners. Energetic Doers need a lot of space and time to themselves; they quickly feel hemmed in if their partners cling too strongly to them. But if you give them plenty of leeway, they are generous, cheerful and extremely imaginative life companions with whom you can have a lot of fun and enjoy life to the full. They do not avoid conflicts but address them openly and sometimes sparks can really fly. But this is typical for Energetic Doers and, afterwards, they are all the more devoted and loving.

wedding gig
9:13 AM
on saturday, i dj'd a wedding dinner-type gathering in louisville. the couple, marc and addie, were getting married the next day, so this was sort of a wedding "preception", as opposed to a "reception".

anyway, the drive was nice; i was re-listening to Rant ( <- spoiler warnings on that wiki link!). just under 2 hours, and great weather. i arrived early, and though i had minor difficulty finding it, the google maps on my phone helped (yay for satellite view!).

the only hitch was that the power cable for my laptop had fallen out of my backpack (i found it laying on the floor in my living room when i returned home). luckily marc's brother was able to borrow/bring one that worked, so all was well.

i was scheduled from 5pm to 10pm, and there were no toasts/speeches or whatever, so it was just me playing music. it was family friendly, but not too cheesy. the couple had suggested a lot of music, ranging from Nina Simone to The Decemberists, and i augmented that with a lot of 80s (which everyone likes) and my own stuff that i felt worked, like Kathy Diamond (that wiki entry doesn't do her justice... find her record).

at about 8, the groom came by and told me that in an hour i could make the music a little "weirder". they had seen me play at clique, and wanted me to do my own thing, not just be a "wedding dj".

awesome.

so for the last hour (and a half, actually, since i stayed late), i played electro, baile, bassline, and a little dubstep. i had a little dance party of about 15 people! good times.

it was also good practice using serato without decks, doing everything with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts. after about an hour, i had the controls memorized, and by the end i was doing continuous mixes and mashups/blends. pretty cool.

the last wedding i did wasn't a very pleasant experience overall, so i'm really glad that this one went so well. if it hadn't, i might have sworn off of them! many thanks to marc & addie, and i wish them the best.

i made it back to cinci in time to catch the end of the frankie vega show. the librarian, my parter for our monthly night called SCHWARZ, was opening, but i missed his set. vega wasn't bad -- he played techno, which was good, since someone had told me he was a house dj. i'm not sure that would have been much fun at all.

hard drive issue...
12:04 PM
so, suddenly last night / today, i'm having issues with my external drive. some directories are coming up "not accessible", "corrupted and unreadable".

this sucks, clearly, especially because a few weeks ago i bought this drive *as a backup*, but then the old drive started to act weird (i.e., sometimes not spinning/booting up), so i started using the new one as my main one, thinking i wouldnt need to go get a new backup one soon.

dumb.

UPDATE: i stopped using it earlier, because i noticed that some files i was able to use last night were unavailable this morning. on the way home i bought the same drive to have a destination for any files i could get.

got home, (took a nap,) and fired up the dying(?) drive. i could see everything in the root folder, but accessing any files gave me a denied permission error.

ugh.

after futzing around for a long time with permissions, which wouldn't take, i finally resorted to a recovery program. now i see this:

recovery

so, looks like this will be done some time around 9am. on the bright side, the files i've tried so far all seem to be ok.

phew.

i wish i had vodka here.

New York songs
9:16 AM
Someone on an email list I'm on is making a New York comp. I upped a couple tracks for them, so I figured I'd share them here too.

Serge Gainsbourg "New York USA"
Bobby Jimmy "New York Rapper"
Fannypack "Seven One Eight"
Man Parrish "Boogie Down Bronx"

I had a few more, but didn't share all of them. I didn't have a good digital copy of 2 Skinnee J's "(718)", so I left it out. Both Drop the Lime's "Brooklyn Skank" and Math Head's "South Bronx" are instrumental, so I left them out as well.

I'm sure I have a ton more, especially in my cd collection at home.

SCHWARZ vids on youtube, part 1
8:57 AM
last night i upped a few of the short vids i took at SCHWARZ last week. they were a bit dark so i lightened them a couple notches. i'm no video guy, so they kinda look like crap, but whatev.

here's the guest, dj pantshead of the Evolution Control Committee:

and here he is again, doing one of his on-the-fly mashups, usually implemented via the wheel of mashup:

and here's my partner, The Librarian:

none of me yet -- i was too tired to continue processing the vids last night.
