a weekend busier than i thought it would be
5:27 PM
going into the weekend, i thought it'd be nice to have a bit of a rest before the one i have coming up. as it turned out, i ended up with a full card. weird how that happens sometimes.

friday i sort of hung out at my apartment until Emily got off work. we hit up shanghai mama's, which was awesome as usual. then off across the river, to catch the bourne ultimatum. short review: i like it. many people are bitching online about the shaky cameras and fast edits, but i think they worked.

after bourne we watched an episode of iron chef, the original japanese version, not the (reputedly) piss-poor american version. she'd never seen it, and i hadn't seen it in a very long time. i have about four tapes full of it, so i threw one in and got a rather disappointing episode. it was a sweetfish battle, featuring michiba. not a great one as a first episode.

saturday was allergy day, apparently. my allergies were the worst they'd been in a very long time. i spent much of the afternoon at baba's editing photos. i got through the murder junkies set i took a few weeks ago, and a few older ones.

i tried going out saturday night, but the combo of benadryl & vodka & all my friends leaving and not comong back soon like they said they would made me leave a little early. i was back home by 1:30, playing a little RE4 before bed.

last night emily and i had some dinner at j. alexander, followed by watching a couple videos. first off, since she speaks french (and since i ran across it in the closet) i gave her a copy of tape 1 of the french edition of Muzzy that'd found at the thrift store years back. it's pretty entertaining, actually, and being a language nerd, i might track down some more.

she also brought over a favorite of hers, thoroughly modern millie, a 1967 musical with julie andrews, mary tyler moore, and carol channing. it's something i wouldn't have glanced at twice were it not suggested by someone, but i ended up enjoying it overall. it was directed by george roy hill, whose work i've seen before with slaughterhouse-five. i really liked his color scheme use; often times there'd be an entire room of black & white outfits with splashes of one color (red, green, yellow, or blue, depending on the scenes).

the very politically incorrect chinamen (is that the preferred nomenclature?) were comically badly stereotyped, and one of them was played by pat morita. and i still am not a fan of carol channing (whose character's name, coincidentally, was Muzzy).

a few weeks ago, i went to the gypsy hut to catch the murder junkies. i'd seen them a few years ago (a dozen or so, i think) in indianapolis, and so on a whim i caught this show.

turns out my friend scotty wood, formerly of the cinci band jackass, has been their guitarist for like the last year. weird. but cool.

(thats him in the pic above, with merle allin, g.g. allin's brother, in the backround. more pics here.)

free Bad Taste ringtones
10:46 AM
my dude stAllio! over at Animals within Animals has just announced free Bad Taste ringtones!

do you have a cellphone that can play mp3 ringtones? if so, you're
unlike most bad taste artists, who tend to have ancient, janky phones
from the '90s. but that also means you can take advantage of the new
bad taste ringtones!

http://badtaste4life.com/ringtones.html

we've got ringtones from bt artists like dr. butcher m.d., murkbox,
humdrum, and animals within animals... with more tones representing
more artists in the coming weeks.

and did i mention that it's free? it's not like we expect anyone to
pay for this stuff...
yeah! i recommend stAllio!'s "open as raw", but i imagine ymmv on this stuff, so grab whatever you're feeling.

i still fall in the category of non-mp3 ringtone phone owner, so i'll stick with my midi of Tarkus.

too much benadryl, not enough bourne
2:40 PM
so, my allergies have gone crazy over the last couple days... yikes. i had to dig up my benadryl, but i'm not really used to it any more, so i was completely effed up this morning. yikes.

in other news, i watched the first two Bourne films yesterday and the day before with my new friend Emily. good times. i guess we have to go see the new one in the theater now, huh?

also, don't forget that My Brightest Diamond rules.

as i if needed any more reason to be in love with MIA... she covers a cool Bollywood track. awesome.

the minor 3rd harmony in the chorus (on the line "acting like you want me") gets me every time.

Singing Tesla Coil at Duckon 2007
11:02 AM

this shit is sweet. from the description: "This is a solid-state Tesla coil. The primary runs at its resonant frequency in the 41 KHz range, and is modulated from the control unit in order to generate the tones you hear.

So just to explain a little further, yes, it is the actual high voltage sparks that are making the noise. Every cycle of the music is a burst of sparks at 41 KHz, triggered by digital circuitry at the end of a 'long' piece of fiber optics."
